Recap of AERO Fly-In 2024: HYFLY's Successful Participation
We look back on our successful participation at AERO Fly-In 2024 in Aalen-Elchingen, where we had the opportunity to showcase our new hydrogen fuel cell system, the HYFLY H167™. Held from August 31 to September 1, 2024, the event provided an excellent platform for us to present our innovative propulsion system for general aviation.
What is the H167™?
- A modular all-in-one propulsion system for aviation
- Delivers 70 kW of power
- 7 kg of hydrogen offers five times the endurance of battery-electric systems
- 700 bar hydrogen at automotive standards
- Configurable for various aircraft types, including ultralight aircraft (LTF-UL), CS-22 (TMG), and LSA
Under the “Future Meets History” theme of the event, we demonstrated the H167™ in action, integrated into the flying test bed “DS-2C/HY,” an amphibious ultralight aircraft from Dornier Seawings. Attendees had the chance to experience firsthand how the H167™ system is set to revolutionize sustainable aviation.
AERO Fly-In not only provided a platform for innovative technologies in electric flight but also featured numerous other companies from the fields of accessories and equipment. The event’s exciting flight demonstrations and special shows, combined with professional discussions, made it a unique experience for the entire general aviation community.

The Future Begins Now:
HYFLY H167 at the GreenTech Festival
In the heart of Berlin, at the highly anticipated GreenTech Festival, which will take place from May 15-17, 2024, the HYFLY H167 project undoubtedly stands out as the star. This groundbreaking aviation technology project, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and developed by Kasaero and PS-HyTech, is a promise for a sustainable future.
The GreenTech Festival is a platform for innovators and technologies of a green future and offers HYFLY H167 the perfect opportunity to showcase itself to a global audience. The atmosphere before the show is a mixture of excitement and curiosity: HYFLY H167 is equipped with an optimized fuel cell system that signals a new era in aviation technology. The heart of the project, a modular hydrogen-powered fuel cell engine, can deliver 70 kW of power. However, its true value lies in its environmental friendliness: it emits no CO2 during operation, which represents a decisive step towards the decarbonization of the aviation industry.
The technical details of the H167 fascinate experts. Its fuel cell uses hydrogen stored in specially manufactured spherical carbon fiber tanks. These tanks are not only lightweight but also cost-efficient, reducing operating costs by around 30% compared to conventional systems, while also simplifying integration into different types of aircraft.
With the support of the University of Stuttgart, the project team recently reached a milestone: in a ground test, the drive unit achieved an impressive 70 kW at 2000 rpm.
As the show approaches, anticipation is growing among visitors from around the world, potential investors and aviation enthusiasts for this exhibition, whose technology and potential already heralds a significant impact on the aviation sector. The HYFLY team plans to conduct the first flight soon, which will confirm the comprehensive functionality and performance of this innovative system. With the launch of the GreenTech Festival 2024, the aircraft powered by the HYFLY H167 propulsion system is not just an airplane. It is a glimmer of hope for the future and convincing proof that sustainable technology can change our world. A new era of clean, efficient and safe aviation, powered by green innovations, is on the horizon.

HYFLY wins the Sustainable Aviation Award 2023!
HYFLY, a ZIM-funded collaborative project between Kasaero, PS-HyTech, Flying Ad and the Technical University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS), has won the Sustainable Aviation Award 2023 in the category “Energy Sources and Propulsion Systems for Aviation”. The award recognizes the project’s pioneering work in developing the first fully integrated hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system for light aircraft, which enables quiet and CO2-free operation with a long range, setting a new standard for sustainable flying.
The HYFLY project grew out of a joint feasibility study conducted by Kasaero and PS-HyTech in 2020 to explore the potential and benefits of fuel cell applications for light aircraft. The project received public funding that enabled the two companies to design, develop and integrate the system into a flying demonstrator. Würzburg-Schweinfurt Technical University (THWS) joined the team and is conducting laboratory and ground tests of the fuel cell system and powertrain. FlyingAD in Austria supports the project in planning and conducting flight tests as well as practical evaluation.
As part of the HYFLY project, PS-HyTech’s new pressurized hydrogen tank was unveiled, offering a 50% weight and cost advantage over previously available solutions. The overall system enables a 30% reduction in operating costs compared to conventional propulsion systems, representing a turning point in the industry. The tank and propulsion system will be installed in the Dornier Seawings DS-2C/HY amphibious aircraft, allowing the German-registered ultralight to achieve a maximum flight time of five hours, two hours more than the original Rotax internal combustion engine variant.
Kasaero is actively driving inventiveness in general aviation as an aircraft developer, manufacturer, supplier and certification expert. The HYFLY project is scalable, and the team is actively seeking partners who are willing to invest in both a financially and environmentally sustainable way. Specifically, aircraft manufacturers or OEMs can help the team take the next steps, including integrating their next system into the already EASA CS-23 certified Flight Design F2e aircraft.
The HYFLY project is an important milestone in the aviation industry’s quest for sustainable solutions and demonstrates that the aviation industry is taking responsibility for its impact on the environment and working to reduce emissions. The HYFLY project sets a new benchmark for sustainable aviation and will undoubtedly pave the way for further innovation in the future.
The HYFLY project has shown that it is possible to push the boundaries of aviation technology while taking the environment into account. Thanks to the commitment and expertise of the HYFLY team, we can look forward to a future where flying is not only quiet, efficient and safe, but also sustainable.
